1.What is AI? An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and How It Works

1.1 Definition and Overview

Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short, is the latest, most revolutionary, most rapidly evolving, and possibly the most pivotal technological trend in the 21st century. Everywhere we look around us at the current moment in time, there is AI being used to advance or enhance a particular aspect of our immediate environment. As per the latest global statistics, the AI market value is at around $196 billion, and furthermore, it is expected to grow by over 13x in the next 6 years.

From AI-powered document generation to AI-powered customer support, from AI-powered machinery for physical automation to AI-driven vehicles: every workflow, whether industrial or individual, is using AI in one way or another for greater efficiency and control over the execution process. So, with its importance in the modern world established, the obvious question to bring up is to define what Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is and what it comprises in its fundamentals.

Artificial Intelligence
is defined as a network of hyper-intelligent computer systems that have been programmed with high-level human intelligence and understanding to not just think like us but also to learn like us. AI can simulate a wide range of tasks that require human intelligence, such as visual perception, factor-based decision-making, content generation, speech recognition, and language translation.

AI can execute the same with much faster speed while providing the latest results based on the data models that power the systems, and they are regularly checking for any necessary updates that might be required in their information.

1.2 Brief History and Evolution

Discussions for the development and usage of an intelligent system like AI for everyday or big-scale enterprise tasks have been dated back to the mid to late 20th century, and the seeds for what artificial intelligence is today can be found in ancient history as well, with the myths of mechanical men in Greek and Egyptian roles who had a level of intellect and understanding beyond human conventions.

However, the formal, central foundation for what AI is today is said to have been established in the mid-20th century, when John McCarthy coined the term “artificial intelligence” during the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, which is now considered the moment AI was born as a field of study in computer science. Early research work on AI primarily focused on rule-based systems, problem solving, and symbolic methods where predefined rules were used as the basis and reference for making any decisions.

Then, between the 1980s and 2010s, with the rise of machine learning and neural network concepts, AI implemented learning algorithms to assess and interpret dynamic data rather than pre-programmed rules. And now, with the modern breakthroughs in deep learning, computer vision, generative AI, and big data, as well as natural language processing (NLP), the real-world applications of artificial intelligence have grown tenfold.

1.3 How AI Works?

There are generally 4 steps involved in the workflow of Artificial Intelligence: inputs, processing, outcomes, adjustments and assessments.

1. Input:
The first step of any Artificial Intelligence system workflow involves the information input, where data is collected from a vast number of sources in many different forms, such as text, audio, video, image, etc. This collection of data is then sorted into different categories based on the type of data that can or cannot be read by AI algorithms. Following this division and sorting, a certain protocol and criteria are also fixed to process the data and generate the outcomes.

2. Processing:
Once the AI system has gathered large quantities of input data, the next step involves the processing of the same based on the predefined protocols or criteria. What AI does is that it uses different kinds of patterns and parameters to sort and decipher the data it’s received, and then it decides what to do with it. These patterns are programmed into the AI systems for recognizing data with a similar flow and pattern.

3. Outcomes:

Once the data has been processed adequately, AI uses its predefined patterns to predict the outcomes of the data. Basically, in this step, AI decides whether the processed data it’s received has “passed or "failed," and the criteria for the data to pass or fail depends on whether the pattern of the data matches the previous patterns as well. Once a decision has been made on whether the data is pass or fail, outcomes can be determined to make decisions.

4. Adjustments and Assessments:
If the processed data is considered to be a "fail,"  then AI systems repeat the process under different, suitable conditions with adjusted rules to accommodate the data set that was unable to pass the previous criteria. Once all the required data sets have been adjusted and processed accordingly, AI makes predictions based on the outcomes and adjustments to gain further insights.

1.4 Importance of AI in Today's World

Artificial Intelligence has gone from being a dream of the future to being a part of our everyday, inimitable present. What was once considered impossible to achieve in AI’s absence is now available to us within a few clicks and presses. The exponential growth of AI has made tasks that took hours upon hours of investment from a large group of people a lot easier and more efficient than before.

For example, let’s take a look at how AI has improved manufacturing processes around the world. Generally, what was considered to be the rule of thumb was for human workers to manage and oversee all kinds of manual tasks that were on the priority list. However, with the onset of AI, things have changed drastically. Now, AI-powered manufacturing robots can perform a wide range of manual tasks that are often repetitive and time-consuming to free up human workers, whose natural level of intelligence can be utilized for tasks that require human understanding and emotions. Similarly, in the healthcare industry, AI helps improve patient outcomes and treatment processes by streamlining and automating other administrative tasks, thus allowing medical professionals to focus entirely on providing personalized care to their patients.

Businesses such as retail websites use AI to provide recommendations to their users or customers based on their browsing and viewing history as well as their buying history. Financial institutions use AI’s predictive analytics to make better decisions and cut costs significantly. And for everyday use, we have AI-powered systems such as Alexa and Google Home, which automate homely tasks for us. Even intelligent LLMs (large language models) such as ChatGPT, which are examples of generative AI, have helped benefit students and researchers with their wide source of information and prompt responses to users' inputs and demands. Fine-tuning these LLMs on specific datasets can further enhance their relevance and accuracy, allowing them to provide even more tailored and insightful responses in specialized fields.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how much AI has become the norm for all kinds of workflows, personal or professional. And with its continued evolution, it remains clear that these limitless applications will continue to grow.

1.5 What are the different types of artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence has numerous types, which can be classified into different categories based on AI’s capabilities, functionalities, and technologies.

Based on Capabilities:

(a) Narrow/Weak AI: This type of AI operates under a limited range or pre-defined set of contexts to perform a specific, narrow task, such as facial recognition or vehicle driving. Most of the AI systems currently in use fall into this category.
(b) General/Strong AI: This type of AI is known for its human-like intelligence and cognitive capabilities to tackle new and unfamiliar tasks autonomously. It is also known as strong AI as it is able to utilize its strong intelligence to resolve any kinds of real-world problems or challenges without any human need or interference.
(c) Superintelligent AI: This is a type of AI that is, for the time being, purely theoretical; it has not been developed yet, and it is presumed that it won’t be developed for a long time. However, when fully developed, it is estimated that this type of AI will completely surpass human intelligence in every way, shape, and form across all different fields, such as creativity, wisdom, problem solving, etc.

Based on Functionalities:

(a) Reactive Machines: This subcategory of AI machines does not store any memory or data, nor do they provide any kind of predictive analytics for future events. What they basically do is analyze and respond to the different situations as they perceive them.
(b) Limited Memory: These are the types of AI systems that store a vast amount of historical data based on real experiences as part of their memory and study it accordingly to make informed real-time present decisions. Most of the AI applications in use today fall under this subcategory of AI machines.
(c) Theory of Mind: This subcategory of AI machines is said to be able to understand and remember different emotions, users’ beliefs and needs, and then combining all of those factors, it would make a suitable decision. To function correctly and ideally, this type of AI system has to be able to understand human beings completely, which is why it’s still in development.
(d) Self-Aware AI: This is the most intelligent form of AI that is considered to be primarily theoretical as of now. As per its researchers’ findings, this type of AI represents a future where machines will have their own consciousness, their own thoughts and feelings, as well as their own sentience, and they will be able to make their own decisions while having emotions and understanding them suitably.

And then, lastly, AI is also divided into different types based on the different types of technologies it comprises:

- Machine Learning
- Deep Learning
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- Computer Vision
- Robotics
- Generative AI
- Expert Systems

We will expand on them in the section below:

2.Understanding Key Concepts and Terminology in Artificial Intelligence

2.1 Machine Learning

Machine Learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that involves using intelligent data models and AI algorithms to implement human-level capability and accuracy of learning in AI systems so as to better improve their overall performance and efficiency.

In general, machine learning involves AI systems taking some specific input and then producing a rough estimate about the pattern occurring repeatedly in the data to make a mostly accurate prediction or classification.

2.2 Deep Learning

Deep Learning is a subcategory of machine learning that uses multilayered neural networks to create an internal simulation of how the human brain works and how it takes in information and data and considers all possible scenarios, positive or negative, to reach a suitable conclusion as well as make the best possible decision out of it.

The multi-layered neural networks utilized in a deep learning system are known as deep neural networks, and they differentiate from the traditional neural networks utilized by conventional machine learning models, which only use one or two computational layers, as compared to the hundreds or thousands of layers found in a deep neural network.

2.3 Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Procesing (NLP) refers to the ability of intelligent, powerful AI systems to understand and interpret human language proficiently in the form of both speech as well as text.

NLP combines statistical modeling with computational linguistics and machine learning/deep learning to enable computers to transform raw text or speech into actionable pieces of information.

2.4 Computer Vision

Computer Vision is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) where the systems and computers powered by AI utilize machine learning and neural network technologies to derive meaningful, sensible pieces of information from visual digital data such as images, videos, etc. For detailed info refer to our comprehensive guide on computer Vision.

Computer vision works the same way as human vision, with the key difference being that human beings have years and years of experience to differentiate between the context of what they’re viewing, and computer vision systems, on the other hand, need to be trained on heavy volumes of data to gain that contextual understanding.

And once trained, these systems have the ability to far surpass human capabilities when it comes to inspecting visual data for key information.

2.5 Robotics

Robotics is the field of engineering and computer science where machines are built and programmed in such a way that they can perform manual tasks in an automated manner with greater efficiency and accuracy as compared to humans.

These machines, or robots, are able to speed up the execution of multiple duties simultaneously without any need for human intervention. Robots are used when the jobs that need to be performed are either too difficult to be successfully executed by humans or when they are too redundant or repetitive.

These repetitive tasks can potentially waste the human resources and efforts available, which can instead be used for other tasks requiring human knowledge and understanding. Thus, in these scenarios, robots are preferred to be used.

2.6 Generative AI

Generative AI (GenAI) is a category of artificial intelligence that involves creating a wide variety of content in the form of text, image, video, or audio based on the prompts input by the user. By learning patterns from large volumes of existing data,

Generative AI uses this knowledge to generate new, unique outputs. The real standout feature of generative AI lies in the fact that it is capable of producing high-quality content that is realistic, complex, and perfectly able to mimic human creativity to produce relative outputs in different industries, such as the gaming field, where it’s used for AI-generated NPCs or AI-generated gaming worlds, or the entertainment field, where AI-generated posters or AI-generated videos are rapidly gaining ground-level popularity.

Several key breakthroughs in the world of generative AI have become household names, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or MidJourney. All of these virtual assistants are being used in massive numbers now to enhance the quality of the generated outputs in the fields of art, research, product design, or even complex problem solving.

2.7 Expert Systems

An expert system is defined as a program or a series of programs that apply a human expert level of knowledge and understanding to complex problems and solve them by extracting the knowledge stored in its knowledge base, which is an actual storage location for the program to store all the knowledge it has gathered by interpreting and understanding the volumes of data that are fed into it.

The performance of an expert system is entirely dependent on this knowledge, which is stored in the knowledge base; the more knowledge is stored, the more that system is able to improve its performance.

Expert systems are defined by their high performance capabilities as well as their ability to respond in a way that is easily understandable by the user. Expert systems are able to take inputs in a human language and then respond back in a human language as well within a very short period of time.

5.2 Evolution of AI Tools and Ecosystems

AI tools and technologies are continuously evolving and improving at a rapid rate of innovation. The 2012 AlexNet neural network is said to be the foundation stone that ushered in the current modern era of high-performance AI tools and technologies built using GPUs (Graphic Processing Units) and large data sets. Google followed suit and then further led the way to find a more efficient and elegant process for provisioning AI training across a vast number of PCs with the help of GPUs. With their 2017 research paper, titled “Attention is All You Need,"  Google researchers introduced a novel architecture to improve AI performance that was driven by transformers, which automate several aspects of training AI on unlabeled data.

The AI stack has also witnessed several significant changes and growths in the last few years. Earlier, enterprises and companies had to train their AI models from scratch, but now, with the help of vendors such as OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, pre-trained transformers or GPTs, can be widely utilized and fine-tuned for specific tasks.

The 21st century has been primarily marked and defined by a symbiotic relationship that has developed between algorithmic advancements at big tech companies such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI and hardware advancements from infrastructure pioneers such as Nvidia, AMD, etc.

It is this same symbiotic relationship that has made it possible to run huge-scale AI models smoothly, leading to game-changing improvements in performance and scalability whose ripple effects will be long-lasting, making it possible for dozens of other future breakout AI services to reap the benefits of the same.

5.3 Artificial Intelligence Training Models

Artificial intelligence is capable of doing a bazillion things already, despite being in the nascent phase of its implementation. However, it’s not like the technology came out of the metaphorical technological womb with everything already learned and understood.

For its features to function properly, AI requires a large volume of training data sets that it draws information from to learn and understand everything. As we learned before, machine learning is a subset of AI that oversees the process of training machines to infer and interpret data to obtain certain results.

This process generally involves different kinds of learning or training models based on the type of data/information implementation followed:

5.2.1. Supervised Learning

This particular type of machine learning or training model involves mapping a specific input to an output with the help of labeled or structured training data. For example, in supervised learning, if we want to train our algorithm to recognize pictures of a sedan, we feed it pictures upon pictures of a variety of cars, with all the pictures labeled as sedans.

5.2.2. Unsupervised Learning

In unsupervised learning, a training model is able to learn different patterns based on unstructured or unlabeled training data. As compared to supervised learning, where we are aware of our output beforehand, in unsupervised learning, the end result is not known prior to the output. Here, the algorithm basically learns from the data it is receiving, then categorizes it into different groups and categories based on the different attributes present.

Unsupervised learning is primarily preferred for AI training models that are built with a use case of pattern matching and recognition in mind, such as face or voice recognition softwares in mobile devices.

5.2.3. Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement learning, as the name suggests, is a kind of machine learning that involves reinforcement, or, in broader terms, learning by actually doing things. An example of reinforcement learning in the subcategory of AI would be teaching a robotic hand how to pick up an item.

Initially, this robotic hand would slowly learn to perform this specific task it is assigned by a trial-and-error process, which would continue until the performance of the robotic hand is at a satisfactory level.

Once it has reached said level, the robotic hand will receive a certain amount of active, positive reinforcement directed towards itself, which will have an overall positive effect on its further practice and learning. However, if the robotic hand fails to achieve the desired task at that certain minimum level of satisfactory performance, it will receive negative reinforcement.

5.3 Types of Artificial Neural Networks

Artificial neural network is a very common type of AI training model that is loosely based on the human brain in its overall structure and features. These neural networks are a system of artificial neurons, also known as computational nodes, which are used to analyze and classify different types of data and information.

The output of these neurons, or perceptrons, as they are often referred to, helps the neural network accomplish whatever task it is specified to achieve, such as classifying a particular object into a category or finding specific patterns in a piece of data.

Here are some of the most common types of Artificial Neural Networks used in the AI development process:

5.3.1. Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN)

GAN, or Generative Adversarial Networks are artificial neural networks that involve two different neural networks competing against each other in a standoff where one network, known as ‘The Generator’, creates multiple varieties of examples that the other network, known as ‘The Discriminator',’ attempts to prove true or false. This constant back-and-forth between the two neural networks ultimately helps improve the overall accuracy of the output generated.

5.3.2. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)

Convolutional Neural Networks, or CNN, are a collection of several different, distinct layers that filter different parts of any object they are recognizing before putting them back together in one fully connected layer.

These neural networks are most commonly used in image recognition, where they filter the original image into several different bite-sized parts, and once the individual analysis and insight gathering process has been completed on all the separate parts, they are put back together to form an output that successfully recognizes the image.

5.3.3. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN)

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) are called such because they carry the “memory” of what happened earlier in the previous layer during the process.

RNNs remain a top-choice for tasks that involve natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as language translation, image captioning, or speech recognition, as they can keep in mind and memory the other words used in a sentence and provide the appropriate solutions concurrently.

5.3.4. Long/Short Term Memory (LSTM)

Long/Short Term Memory (LSTM) is a more advanced form of RNN, but where it differentiates is in its usage of the memory; it uses the memory to “remember” what happened in the previous layers, as compared to RRN, which carries the memory with itself through all layers of the process. LSTM, like RNN, is used in voice recognition applications as well as to make predictions.

5.3.5. Feedforward Neural Networks (FNN)

In feedforward neural networks (FNN), data flows in one way through several layers of artificial neurons until the required and desired output is achieved by the system.

These neural networks are often paired with an additional error-correction algorithm, known as "backpropagation,"  which actually starts with the result of the neural network and simply works its way back to the beginning of it, finding errors along the way to improve the overall performance and accuracy of the neural network.

5.4 AI Development Platforms (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)

Many of the AI programming languages we discussed above, such as Python, R, and Java, have incorporated and implemented several different libraries and frameworks that can serve the function of an AI development platform and be used for a multi-purpose, free-flowing development process. Some of these AI development platforms are:

5.4.1. TensorFlow

TensorFlow is an open-source Python library developed by Google Brain for machine learning and deep learning that provides a supportive and all-encompassing platform for the development and deployment of enterprise-grade AI applications.

It can be used across a range of tasks, such as the development of models for natural language processing, image recognition, handwriting recognition, and different computational-based simulations such as partial differential equations, but it is known for having a particular focus on the training and inference of deep neural networks.

5.4.2. PyTorch

PyTorch, a machine learning library developed by Facebook AI Research, provides a range of dynamic computation graphs, which makes it easier for developers to visualize complex data models and experiment with them wherever necessary.

It is a convenient and flexible library that covers a wide range of AI use cases, such as natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and image classification.

5.4.3. Caret

Caret, which is short for Classification And Regression Training, is an R package that provides a consistent interface for machine learning algorithms to make it easy to train, tune, and evaluate machine learning models.

This package contains several different functions that are used to streamline the AI model training process for really complex regression and classification problems.

5.4.4. JavaCV

JavaCV, as the name suggests, is a Java library primarily used for leveraging support to perform computer vision techniques such as image and video processing, object recognition and detection, etc.

It uses wrappers from the JavaCPP presets of commonly used libraries to provide utility classes, which can speed up the computer vision development process.

5.4.5. OpenNLP

OpenNLP, or Apache OpenNLP, is Java’s popular open-source natural language processing (NLP) library or toolkit used for NLP tasks such as tokenization, named entity recognition, sentence segmentation, and part-of-speech tagging, as well as entity extraction, chunking, parsing, co-reference resolution, etc.

5.5 AI Hardware (e.g., GPUs, TPUs)

So far, we have delved well and deep into the gamut of knowledge and information there is to find on the software and algorithmic sides of AI. Now, we will shift our attention to the hardware that makes it all possible to begin with.

A series of specialized components and computational devices, such as GPUs, TPUs, and NPUs, help accelerate and facilitate the high and constantly increasing demands of artificial intelligence tasks. This collection of components is referred to broadly as AI hardware.

We will delve into each of these components here to gain a stronger core understanding of what’s happening behind the scenes that makes AI what it is:

5.5.1. Graphical Processing Units (GPU)

The Graphical Processing Units, or GPUs, were initially developed to meet the ever-increasing demand of the video game industry, which required a constant stream of high-quality video graphics generation.

GPUs core architecture, consisting of thousands of smaller cores, provided the necessary rapid innovation to make this possible.

However, it didn’t take long for a community of AI developers to take note that the GPU’s architectural advantage meant that they could process many vast quantities of data simultaneously and use it to train large neural networks more efficiently, as compared to waiting for weeks to train a model using a CPU.

A GPU, however, would only take mere days or hours to completely train a single AI model, which has made it the go-to preference for training models’ core architecture design.

5.5.2. Tensor Processing Units (TPU)

Tensor Processing Units, or TPU, are one of the two in a pair of processing units designed from the ground up for the purpose of meeting the growing demands for AI tasks more efficiently and optimizing the specific operations and data flows of neural networks, the other being the NPU, or Neural Processing Unit.

8.Ethical Issues and Considerations in Artificial Intelligence

8.1 Bias and Fairness in AI

Because they are trained and modeled on a specific set of data, AI systems are believed to be only as good or trustworthy as the data they have learned from. But there is never a sureshot guarantee that the original data will be free of any inherent biases.

Thus, sometimes AI systems can fall victim to the biases present in the data in the form of gender, racial, or socioeconomic biases. These biases can in turn lead to unfair outcomes and decisions taken by the AI systems and perpetuate discrimination and inequality in today’s time, which can be harmful.

To ensure a consistent sense of fairness and unbiased decision-making, AI developers are required to use a variety of different datasets and implement different bias detection and mitigation techniques such as re-sampling, adversarial debiasing, re-weighting, etc.

These techniques help create more balanced AI models that ensure a certain level of transparency in their algorithms and decision making, which can help improve accountability and trust among the users of the AI systems.

8.2 Privacy Concerns

We have discussed at arm’s length how AI improves personalization for users with its intelligent, analytical and interpretive capabilities. However, it must be understood that for the AI systems to offer personalized customer services, they require vast amounts of personal user data.

The storage and usage of this data have raised several significant challenges and issues in the past surrounding the safety and privacy of personal user information. There can be certain risks associated with storing this data, such as unauthorized data access, data breaches, or data misuse.

To overcome these privacy concerns, AI developers make sure to adhere to the regulations for data protection, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and implement robust and effective data encryption methods such as differential privacy, which adds artificial nai oise to the datasets to help obscure and hide individual data points.

8.3 AI and Employment

The growing demand and capabilities of AI have led to several discussions surrounding its impact on the employment sector. Many people have expressed their personal predictions or fears about how AI is going to overtake many industries’ workforces, as its advanced features growing day-by-day will eventually render any need for a manual workforce to be completely useless.

Its advent and implementation have caused many companies to increase their number of employee layoffs so that they can cut the overall costs and get a similar or sometimes even better quality of work from AI systems, which are much cheaper in comparison.

However, many people also believe that AI is something that cannot replace all of the human workforces, especially in the creatively-driven fields, as AI can only replicate things that are bound by instructions or protocol, not feeling, creativity or human emotion, all of which are poured into creative fields.

Furthermore, a number of researchers have shared their findings that AI can instead be used to automate and improve the employment process for corporations. A notable example of this is the ATS resume scoring system used by many companies, which helps shortlist resumes sent for applications with a predefined set of criteria. 14.2 What is the AI image generator?

An AI Image Generator is a type of software application that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to create or generate new images. These AI image generators can create images from scratch or transform existing images into new ones by using various algorithms and techniques.

14.3 What kind of AI is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT falls under the category of Generative AI, which describes algorithms that can be used to create new content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos.

14.4 What is the AI on Snapchat?

Snapchat describes its AI system, My AI, as an “experimental, friendly chatbot” that can “help and connect you more deeply to the people and things you care about most.” It's powered by OpenAI's GPT and you can chat with it about anything, answer questions, give recommendations, and even share jokes.

14.5 What is the difference between AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning?

For an analogy, think of a Russian nesting doll: machine learning is a subset of AI, and deep learning is a subset of machine learning.
AI is the superset of various techniques that allow machines to be artificially intelligent.
Machine learning refers to a machine’s ability to think without being externally programmed. While devices have traditionally been programmed with a set of rules for how to act, machine learning enables devices to learn directly from the data itself and become more intelligent over time as more data is collected.
Deep learning is a machine learning technique that uses multiple neural network layers to progressively extract higher-level features from the raw input data.

14.6 What are the major improvements happening in AI?

AI is currently benefiting from more data and more efficient hardware, as well as better AI tools and networks/algorithms. Advancements in state-of-the-art accuracy for various tasks happen regularly due to the collaborative nature of the AI research community through papers and workshops.

14.7 What is the logical way to remove any possible biases in AI algorithms?

When there’s bias in the data set that trains an AI model, the model will contain the same bias. A way to address this bias is by collecting robust and diverse data. If bias is noticed in algorithms, the data should be examined to determine whether new data should be added.

14.8 How does edge computing differ from cloud computing?

Edge computing is computing that happens at the edge cloud or edge device, while cloud computing occurs in the central cloud. Where the processing is located may result in different levels of performance, latency, or privacy. Both offer different benefits and are complementary to each other.

14.9 How can we use machine learning and AI models to improve computer vision?

Computer vision involves generating feature detectors, which traditionally have been handcrafted by humans. With the help of large data sets of labeled images or videos, machine learning, and specifically deep learning, can learn these feature detectors automatically and more accurately than humans.

14.10 Can AI be used for social good?

Absolutely. AI is used to address societal challenges, such as healthcare improvements, disaster response, climate modeling, and poverty alleviation.

14.11 Can AI replace human creativity and intuition?

AI can assist in creative tasks and data-driven decisions but does not replicate human creativity and intuition.
